2023 SBN Water Rescue Symposium Registration
Come join us for the
2023 Annual Surface Water Rescue Symposium
in South Bend, IN United States. This year's conference will be held from June 19-21,2023.
We have also partnered with several training organizations to conduct Post-Symposium Certification Sessions on June 22-24,2023 immediately after the main symposium. Check these out and don't delay; space is limited for the post symposium and Technician Track.

- If you are planning on attending the post symposium training classes; choose ONE class session only; as they all run concurrently. Post Symposium seats are only available to those attending the full symposium and are an additional fee. After selecting your post symposium session, you need to select the full conference tract that you wish to attend.

Technician Track
Details:
This track is designed for the water rescue technician who has at least 2-5 years as a water
rescue technician and who is credentialed as a Swiftwater Rescue Technician. This track is
hands-on and utilizes best practices in the swiftwater environment. Attendees should be in
good physical condition and be prepared to operate in the class III water environment. Please NOTE, this track DOES involve on water activities as a rescuer.
Prerequisites:
- Participants must be trained to the Technician level according to NFPA 1670 Chapter 9;
- Must remain under the workers comp of the participant’s sponsoring agency;
- Have completed NIMS IS-700, IS-800, IS-100, and IS-200;
- Have completed your state’s approved boating safety course or online at www.boatus.org.
By registering for this course you affirm that you meet the above requirements and that your participation in this training is approved by your agency administrator or his/her designee.

Squad/Team Leader Track
Details:
This track will guide and prepare the water rescuer on what it takes to become a leader amongst your team. This course will focus on the traits, actions, and skill sets needed to develop into and thrive as a leader in the water rescue team environment. Whether it’s a Squad Leader position on a USAR activation or as a Team Leader in your agency’s own response, we will cover the ins-and-outs of what it takes to lead in this discipline utilizing real life situations as well
as leadership lessons learned.
The Team Leader track covers the knowledge and training objective set by many of the top USAR team. This course is commonly used for the Squad Leader position.
A focus is placed on best practices and strategies to assist with tactical command and control of field operations; whether it’s a small agency water rescue unit or part of a large-scale operation.

Command Track
Details:
This track will assist the incident commander or first due company officer in developing and deploying resources at the scene of a water rescue incident. The course will focus on the initial actions and deployment of resources to rescue victims as well as define a size up process and report on conditions.
The course will cover; vehicles trapped in moving water, victims trapped on mid river
obstacles, recreational boating incidents, as well as planning for search operations.
We will cover the appropriate tools and techniques to affect a rescue in multiple scenarios while developing a risk analysis of observed hazards and create a "Go no Go checklist."
The course will use a multi- media platform with video of actual rescues to support the scenarios for the students.

Post Symposium - Advanced Rescue Swimmer Course
Details:
This is a Post Symposium 2-day course starting at 0800 6/22/23.
The 8-hour, Advanced Rescue Swimmer course is a fast-paced course focused on aggressive swimmer
techniques in moving water. The course is designed for the “Go” rescue with safe and aggressive
swimming techniques.
Minimum requirements: Surface water / Swift water Technician Level, above
average swimming abilities. Minimum Equipment: Water helmet, High float PFD, Water footwear, Appropriate thermal protection, Mask (dive or swim), Snorkel, Fins.

Post Symposium - Flood Rescue Resource Management
Details:
This is a Post Symposium 2-day course starting at 0800 6/22/23.
Focus of the class will be an overview of managing a wide area incident as well as technology that can assist and how to utilize that technology in decision making. Instructors will bring real-life examples of large-scale incident response. Examples of how these processes can be implemented into training scenarios to build knowledge and skills throughout your team. This course will include lecture and hands on scenario

Post Symposium - Rescues From Vehicles in Moving Water
Details:
This is a Post Symposium class will be a 2-day course starting at 0800 6/22/23.
This technician level course is designed to provide Swiftwater rescue technicians the tools necessary to rescue survivors trapped in/on vehicles in moving water. This 3-day course will begin with a short classroom session covering size-up considerations and the effects of moving water on vehicles; as well as how to access and stabilize the vehicle and extricate survivors. The remainder of Day 1 will begin our hands-on training, covering boat based and operations level rescue techniques. Day-2 of the course will be entirely hands-on, covering a multitude of technician level rescue techniques. Lastly, day 3 of the course will provide students with several opportunities to put those skills into action during our reality-based training scenarios. This course will be conducted in the South Bend East Race Water Way and utilize real vehicles secured in real swiftwater. All participants must be certified as Swiftwater Rescue Technicians per NFPA 1006 & 1670 standards.
Required PPE (not provided): Helmet, PFD, Dry/Wet Suit, Gloves, Closed Toed Shoes.

Post Sympoisum - Water Team Logistics
Details:
This is a Post Symposium 2-day course starting at 0800 6/22/23.
This two-day mixed lecture/hands-on course will take the participant through different logistical considerations to water rescue teams, boat and motor maintenance, as well as hands on demonstrations of common repairs and preventative maintenance items. We will break down a suggested maintenance schedule, and also focus on the repairs that teams are able to do in the field that can keep your boats and motors running during deployments.
